Kicking Off Black History Month with a Powerful Movement: The 2nd Annual State of the Mind Address
What a way to launch Black History Month! The 2nd Annual State of the Mind Address: “Good Trouble Through History, Hope, and Healing” was more than just an event—it was a movement, a testament to the power of truth, unity, and mental health advocacy in our community.
From the moment the doors opened, the energy in the room was electric. Every conversation, every performance, and every testimony carried weight, reminding us that healing starts with honesty and that together, we can break the stigma surrounding mental health.
A Community Committed to Mental Health
Huge gratitude to Dr. Kevin Thomas and the State of the Mind Institute for leading the charge in prioritizing mental health in our community. What started as a conversation a year and a half ago has evolved into something truly transformative. This event was a testament to the fact that the solutions we seek are already within us—we just have to do the work.
Our respected elders—Tommy Meeks, LoRayne Logan, and Clarice Posley—brought wisdom, transparency, and lived experiences that served as powerful reminders of how history shapes our healing journey. Their words reinforced the importance of looking to the past as we forge a path forward.
Breaking the Stigma—One Conversation at a Time
Mental health professionals are the backbone of this movement, and we were honored to have incredible therapists Teresa Barnes, Ashton Lockhart, and William Weddle join the discussion. Their insights and dedication to advocacy remind us that prioritizing mental well-being is an ongoing commitment—one that requires both community and professional support.
The event was not just about conversations but also about expression through music and art. Performers Trinity Rucker, Terrica Huntley, Tina Huntley-Thomas, and Ronnie Lockhart & friends brought a depth of emotion to the event, capturing the very essence of healing and resilience.
