Standing Against Bullying: Remembering Jalyah Thompson

Last week, the City of Rockford lost a young angel. My heart goes out to the family of 11-year-old Jalyah Thompson, who tragically took her own life due to bullying. No child should ever feel so alone or hopeless. This heartbreaking loss is a stark reminder of the urgent need to address bullying in our schools, provide better mental health support for our youth, and create safe spaces where every child feels valued and heard.

The Urgent Need for Action

Jalyah’s passing is not just a tragedy—it’s a call to action. Bullying continues to be a pervasive issue, impacting the mental and emotional well-being of our children. Studies show that children who experience bullying are at a higher risk of developing anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. As a community, we cannot afford to ignore this crisis.

We must come together—parents, educators, lawmakers, and community leaders—to:

  • Strengthen anti-bullying policies in our schools and enforce zero-tolerance measures.

  • Provide mental health resources that ensure students have access to counseling and emotional support.

  • Educate children and parents about the impact of bullying and how to foster kindness and inclusion.

  • Encourage open conversations so no child feels unheard or alone.

Supporting Jalyah’s Family

During this unimaginable time, we have an opportunity to show Jalyah’s family that they are not alone. If you would like to offer support, please consider donating to the family’s GoFundMe campaign:

Additionally, local community members have organized fundraisers to support Jalyah’s family. More information can be found here:

Together, We Can Make a Difference

Jalyah’s story must not be forgotten. Let us honor her memory by taking action against bullying and ensuring that every child in our community feels safe, loved, and supported. It’s time to stand together, speak up, and advocate for change.

Let’s work toward a future where no family has to endure such a heartbreaking loss.
